A Peek Behind The Hedges: A Weekend in Ojai

This past weekend, we went Behind The Hedges with our longtime friend, designer, and storyteller Malcolm James Kutner, at his home in Ojai—a place that feels less like a destination and more like a sanctuary of the soul.

Malcolm has spent over two decades shaping spaces that go beyond beauty. His work is layered, intuitive, and deeply personal—each project a reflection of the lives unfolding within it. As a designer, curator, and collector of stories, Malcolm reminds us that home isn’t just a place—it’s a presence. It’s how it makes you feel.

We’ve been quietly dreaming up Behind The Hedges for a while now. A series built around the spaces that move us—not just for their design, but for their meaning. These are homes with stories, with soul. Places that are lived in, loved, and a little bit magic.

Our shoot day in Ojai was slow and sweet in all the right ways. We started the morning at the Ojai Farmers Market, gathering fresh flowers and fruit for the day. We walked to lunch at our favorite Rory’s Place, then picked up a chilled bottle of red from Point de Chêne Wine & Beer to enjoy as we wrapped.

Malcolm’s home welcomed us with warmth, history, and a quiet elegance that invites you to slow down and stay awhile. It was the perfect beginning to this series—and a reminder of what makes a space truly special.

We can’t wait to share more from this visit—and all the stories to come.

Stay tuned for the first look.
